Àííîòàöèÿ: On Goes the River is a reader designed to accompany any intermediate level textbook for English as a second language. Its purpose is to give students supplementary reading practice, and to help them to increase their vocabulary and reinforce their knowledge of grammatical structures. You will see from the Table of Contents that particular structures are emphasized in each story. The stories, however, come first; we have not used them merely as a vehicle for the presentation of structure, since this would lead to contrived situations and an unnatural style. Approximately 1,000 vocabulary items are used in On Goes the River and are based on the Thorndike and Lorge list of 1,000 most-used words. Those words not taken from the list are classified as 'new' and are defined at the heading of each story. Although these stories are written primarily to help the English student improve his reading ability, we hope that at the same time they will be enjoyable and informative, and that they will give the learner a feeling of accomplishment.

Àííîòàöèÿ: The Prettiest Girl in Town is a reader for students of English as a second language at about the second year level. It is designed to accompany any text containing the structure points indicated in the table of Contents or it may be used independently. Each of the nine stories in this book stresses certain grammar points. Each story is followedby a series of questions and exercises based on the reading. A key to these exercises will be found at the back of the book

Àííîòàöèÿ: Impossible dreams is an upper-intermediate reader at the 2000 word level. Most of the vocbulary items will b found in Michael West's GNERAL SERVICE LIST OF ENGLISH WORDS. Those items not taken from the list are given in the Glossary sections following each chapter. The definitions in the Glossary sections following each chapter. The definitions in the Glossary pertain only to the context in which they are used here. Impossible dreams contains a variety of readings, both in form and content. The student of English reading these short stories, historical sketches, plays , etc., will hopefully be inspired to continue working toward the perfection of his knowledge of English, ralizing that it is by no means impossible, even though it requires self-disciplin and diligence

Àííîòàöèÿ: The Secret formula is designe as a supplementary reader for upper-intermediate students of English as a foreign language. It contains about 1500 vocabulary items, most of which will be found in Michael West's General Service List of English Words. Those words that are nat taken from the list are defined in a glossary folowing the list each reading selection. The definitions of the words relate to the particular meaning which they have in the text. In each of the chapters of The Secret Formula, which is a combination of fact and fiction, certain structures at the upper-intermediate level hav been stressed: these are noted in the table of contnts. At the same time, a conscious effort has been made to maintain a natural, fre-flowing style in th writing, and not simply to use the story as a vehicle for introducing and practising grammar.
